The Postal Service's Rate Reclassification is now approved
and in effect. The new rate structure affects all mailers, large and small.
For most of you, rate reclassification is an opportunity to save money on
each of your mailings.
What is the USPS Rate Reclassification?
The Rate Reclassification has been described as the single biggest change
to postal rates in 100 years. The goal of reclassification is to encourage
mailers to prepare their pieces in ways that best accommodate automation
capable equipment. Although there are many changes
involved, the primary ones include the following:
What Does Rate Reclassification Mean to You?
If you send any mail in bulk, these new regulations will affect your next
mailing. For example, if you do not currently barcode your mail, the basic
Standard Mail (formerly Third Class) rate INCREASES from 22.6 cent to 25.6
cents, while the basic barcode rate DECREASES from 20.4 cents to 18.3 cents.
This means that the new Standard Mail basic rate is
7.3 cents less expensive if it is prepared in proper automation compatible
format. By doing this, you will save $73.00 per 1000 pieces every time you
mail! Comparable savings are available for First Class as well.
By the same token, if you choose to send your mail in a non-automation format, your rates will increase. Additionally, the preparation for all forms of mail (automation and non-automation) have been changed as well, meaning new presorts are required.
